Police operatives in Ogun State have arrested a suspected member of the Aiye confraternity, Idris Obarayi, 30, and recovered a locally made pistol and live cartridge.

The arrest came hours after gunshots and screams were reported in Oke Ago-Owu area of Abeokuta on Tuesday.

The Command’s spokesperson, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, said SWAT operatives responded to a distress call at about 2:30 a.m. and upon the information, mobilized to the location

Babaseyi noted that the suspects fled on sighting operatives, abandoning the pistol and cartridge during pursuit.

He disclosed that Obarayi was later tracked to his hideout at Ita Ogboni, Igbole, and arrested at about 5:45 p.m. same day.

On interrogation, he was said to have allegedly confessed to being an Aiye member and owning the recovered firearm.

“Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspect allegedly admitted to membership of the Aiye confraternity and claimed ownership of the recovered items. Efforts are ongoing to apprehend the remaining suspects and establish the full circumstances of the incident,” Babaseyi added.

He quoted the Commissioner of Police, CP Bode Ojajuni as commending the SWAT operatives for their prompt response and effective follow-up, reaffirming the Command’s commitment to proactive policing and the swift apprehension of criminal suspects.

He assured residents that credible information would continue to receive prompt attention and that operations to identify and apprehend the fleeing suspects would be sustained.
