London’s Metropolitan Police have confirmed receiving a letter containing allegations about Thomas Markle Sr. and forwarding it to the office of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.
In a statement to the BBC, the force said a review of its records established that the letter arrived in January 2019 and concerned alleged offending outside the United Kingdom. The correspondence was referred to the Met’s Protection Command because it raised concerns about Meghan Markle’s security.
“The letter was reviewed and a decision was made that it should be passed to the office of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex for their awareness,” the force said. Police confirmed that the allegations were not shared with other law enforcement agencies. The Met said it was reviewing how the correspondence was handled to determine whether the matter should be referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct.
Meghan previously said she was “deeply distressed” by an investigation involving her father in the Philippines and linked her decision to cut ties with him to receiving the letter. She had recalled receiving it in 2018, while the Met’s records place its arrival in January 2019.
Her representative told the BBC that any discrepancy of a few months reflected the passage of time. Thomas Markle Sr. has denied the allegations. The police statement confirms the receipt and handling of the letter, rather than establishing the claims it contained.
