2027: Don’t sit on fence, Umahi tells CAN, monarchs

The Minister for Works, David Umahi on Sunday charged leadership of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and traditional rulers in Ebonyi state not to sit on the fence ahead of 2027 general elections.

He reminded members of the Christian Association of Nigeria in the state of the role they played during his struggle in 2015 elections as governorship candidate of the then ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

Umahi in 2015 elections was among the deputy governors who failed to be anointed by their boss to succeed them in office but secured supports of the traditional rulers, some stakeholders and that of the Christian community in his state.

The minister spoke on Sunday during a town hall meeting held at the state Ecumenical Center, Abakaliki, the state capital which had in attendance traditional rulers, former commissioners and members of the state Christian Association of Nigeria.

According to him, “I want to tell our religious leaders and Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), do not stay on the fence. I know when I was struggling to be governor, CAN took a decision and said justice must prevail.

“CAN don’t keep quiet, let us toe the path that must sustain our freedom,”he stated.

The minister who however described the four years proposed tenure of Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, (NDC) as impossible, called on people of the state and other states in the region to vote for the incumbent president of the ruling party.

He argued that the North has not accepted to be president for four years alone.

“There is no way an Igbo man after staying for 60 years, will want to be president for four years. There is nobody that can accept that. The North has not accepted to be president for four years”.
The former governor further cautioned the presidential candidate of the NDC to avoid regional campaign, stressing that Igbos alone cannot make Obi president in 2027.

“Igbo man needs wisdom, not sentiments. Igbo man should not allow people to be dishing hate speeches on social media on their behalf. Today, our people are in commerce, we clear our goods with ease. Today our roads are being revived on the path of economic progress”, he said.
